AM Transmitter Range

Transmitter range is mostly dependent on the type of antenna you use, and how well the antenna is tuned.

  • Additionally a good ground plan is essential for longer distance transmission.
  • Also local environmental conditions such as high buildings, hills etc play a part.
  • And finally the frequency chosen (the higher the frequency the more range when using short antenna)

The Spitfire and Hurricane transmitters are supplied with a basic wire antenna, intended for initial setup and testing.

You will typicaly get about upto 200 feet range, depending on local conditions, with the standard wire antenna. The signal should be strong everywhere within your home.

To maximize the range

You should use an outdoor base-loaded vertical antenna (or similar) with a good ground plan. With this type of antenna installed close to ground level, typicaly expect 1/2 to 1 mile strong-signal range. Range will increase  when the antenna is elevated to 20 feet or more.

Again range is depending on local conditions.
